quoted are tangential to the current issue (Men. fr. 162 features the active form
χόρταζε, while S. fr. 666 features the adjective πάγχορτος: all-satiating). For

Constitution of Text The text as preserved by codex A (cf. Intro. 3 “Tradition
& Reception”) is meaningful (as much as its fragmentary nature can allow)
and scans correctly as iambic trimeter. Therefore, there is no need to adopt
any of the available suggestions regarding alternative readings (by Bothe,
Porson, and Bergk). Yet, there is a crucial question; how should the preserved
text be divided into two lines. Kassel & Austin assign εις την εσπέραν to

line 1 and χορταζόμενα πάσιν άγαθοΐς to line 2. This provides for two full

iambic metres in 1. 2, but none of the caesuras can be applied in the resulting
