Eupolis

is to be taken with the emphatic εγώ (as at e.g. Ar. Pax 725 πώς δήτ’ εγώ
καταβήσομαι;, “How shall I get down?” (in contrast to the dung-beetle, who
is staying in heaven); Av. 1689-90 βούλεσθε δήτ’ εγώ τέως / όπτώ τά κρέα
ταυτί μενών;, “Do you want me to stay here and roast this meat for a while?”
(followed by ύμεΐς δ’ ϊτε, “But you go!”); Philyll. fr. 7.1 βούλεσθε δήτ’ εγώ
φράσω τίς ειμ’ εγώ, “Do you want me to tell you who I am?”; Pl. Pit. 272b
βούλει δήτα εγώ σοι τρόπον τινά διακρίνω, “Do you want me to distinguish
them somehow?” (sc. “since you are unable to do so”)).

Context See fr. 268j n.
Interpretation Kassel-Austin’s typography makes it clear that they regard
this word as drawn from the text of Eupolis, although it is missing from their
edition of the individual fragments on p. 458.
Although άπλώς (<,—) is attested occasionally in comedy (e. g. Ar. V. 537;
Anaxil. fr. 22.23), άτεχνώς (^^—) is normally used instead (cf. fr. 304 n.; Moer.
a 94 άτεχνώς Αττικοί· άπλώς κοινόν, “atechnds: Attic speakers; haplds is the
koine”; [Hdn.] Philet. 243 άτεχνώς- οϋτω λέγουσιν οί Αττικοί περισπωμένως·
σημαίνει τό άπλώς, “atechnds: Attic speakers pronounce it thus, with a circum-
flex; it means haplds”; £RVEBarb Ar. Pl. 109 άτεχνώς· άντί τού άπλώς, “atechnds:
in place of haplds”). That an anapaest cannot stand at the end of an iambic
trimeter line may explain Eupolis’ choice of the word here (as at Ar. Ach. 873).
