Im Brief vom 21. April 1950 berichtete Davidson von den hohen Honorarforderungen des
für die engl. Ausgabe der Einführung in die Philosophie vorgesehenen Übersetzers Ralph
Manheim (vgl. E. Davidson an K. Jaspers, 21. April 1950, DLA, A: Jaspers).
Eine Korrespondenz mit Gollancz ist in der Briefablage des Jaspers-Nachlasses nicht er-
halten.
Es geht um den Davidsons Brief an Jaspers vom 27. September 1950 beigefügten Klappen-
text zu Way to Wisdom, den Davidson verfasst hat: »One of the most eminent among liv-
ing philosophers has now written for the general reader an Introduction to Philosophy in
which he brings to a focus his lifelong concern with what philosophy is and the meaning
it retains for modern man. In Professor Jaspers’ view a man’s philosophy, like the life pro-
cess itself, must undergo continuous change as a result of the development and needs of
the individual and the crises he must experience. It never operates with the certainties of
Science, for when its findings are invariably dependable they are Science and not philos-
ophy. It remains, however, the great source of values and beliefs that can determine the
decisions and enrich the lives even of those living in the hard-bitten twentieth Century.
This book is a remarkably clear and eloquent introduction to an understanding of philos-
ophy and, more important, it provides an approach to a deeper self-understanding that
can be reached by the serious reader through study and contemplation. Karl Jaspers is the
author of thirteen books which have long established him as one of the pioneering and
most profound minds among Contemporary philosophers. The originator of Existential-
ism and a leader of the movement, he became Professor of Philosophy at the University
of Basle in 1948 after nearly thirty years of teaching in Heidelberg. This is the third of his
books to be translated into English; The Perennial Scope of Philosophy appeared in 1949
and Man in the Modern Age in 1933.«

Im ersten Telegramm schlug Davidson als neuen Titel Way to Wisdom vorJaspers schrieb
ihm daraufhin, er sei einverstanden. Im vorliegenden Brief erklärt Davidson den Hinter-
grund für die Änderung des Buchtitels, unter dem das Werk auch publiziert wurde. Vgl.

Press zuständig und hatte Jaspers im April 1952 einen Vertrag zugeschickt, der aber in der
Briefablage des Jaspers-Nachlasses nicht vorliegt. Dass Jaspers ihn aber erhalten hat, geht
