Interpretation This seemingly straightforward lexicographic entry presents
two interrelated difficulties of text and meaning; in all likelihood, the meaning
was disputed already in antiquity (note that Hesychius reports only that the
word describes a phiale), much like the similar άμφίθετος (cf. Ath. 11.500f-ld).
Meineke notes that the text had been emended177 to άμφίθετος on the basis of
Hsch. a 4021 άμφίθετος φιάλη· εκατέρωθεν τίθεσθαι δυναμένη ή άμφοτέρωθεν
τετορευμένη κτλ.; he argues against accepting this emendation by claiming
that άμφίδυσις refers to a cup ‘quae ab utraque parte δύσιν seu στόμα habet’,
i. e. ‘significatur άμφικύπελλον’. Meineke is probably correct in dismissing the
emendation, although his suggested interpretation of the word differs little if
at all from the meaning of άμφικύπελλος. Rather than being a ‘double-cup’, as
LSJ and others have understood it, the word may refers to the indentation on
the bottom of the phiale (i. e. the underside of the central boss that projects into
the cup), which can be quite deep; note that the interpretations of άμφίθετος
listed at Ath. 11.500f-ld nowhere claim that the word refers to a double-cup
but only to one that can be set either right-side-up or upside-down. For the
