a 1907 άνακογχυλιάσαι· άναγαργαρίσασθαι (originally a gloss on Pl. Smp.

Text Pl. Com. fr. 220 άνακογχυλιαστόν έχθοδοπόν τι σκευάσω and Pl. Smp.
185d-e ϋδατι άνακογχυλίασον suggest that the proper form of the verb may
be άνακογχυλιάζω rather than άνακογχυλίζω.
Et.Sym. I p. 3.9-11 Lasserre-Livadaras offers άνακογχυλίσαι ϋδωρ και
ϋδατι, οίον· ϋδωρ μοί τις δότω άνακογχυλίσαι, καί πάλιν· άνακογχύλισον
ϋδατι (Pl. Smp. 185d) (“to gargle water and with water, for example: ‘someone
give me water to gargle!’; and again: ‘gargle with water!’ (Pl. Smp. 185d)”).
Kock integrated the first—otherwise unknown—quotation with the word cited
by [Herodian]/Harpocration to produce continuous fragments of two iambic
trimeter lines, which he then assigned to Eupolis: <x—x—> ϋδωρ μοί τις
δότω / άνακογχυλίσασθαι <1—x—) (“Someone bring me water to
gargle!”; offered by Edmonds in the form <x—x— > ϋδωρ μοί τις δότω /
άνακογχυλίσαι <x—χ—^—)). But this is merely a shot in the dark.
Interpretation Both -κογχυλ- and -γαργαρ- are onomatopoeic with intensive
reduplication; cf. βάρβαρος; Schwyzer 1939. 423. άναγαργαρίζω is common
in the medical writers (e.g. EIp. Morb. II26 = 7.42.6, 10 Littre; Aff. 4 = 6.212.5
Littre; Diodes Med. fr. 183a.31 van der Eijk), but seems to be attested elsewhere
only at Chrysipp. SVFIIL200, xxviii fr. 10.
