and concluded that, from this point on, the text of El no longer comes from Malalas.52
On a stylistic basis, one may wonder how many other caesurae are there to be de-
tected, even before XVII 2.
Conclusion.
Malalas, or someone else?
The very texture of Malalas appears and disappears among the lines of El and it takes
patient work to fit together the pieces of the puzzle.
We must remember that in El we read what in the 10th century was called “Mala-
las” and that the manuscript(s) suffered a lot of damage, not only at the beginning but
also throughout the text.
Yet it is important to verify the manuscript S, the readings of which are not always
inlhurn’s apparatus. It deserves closer analysis and perhaps even a new critical edition.
