Karl Jaspers - Yale University Press
(1947-1952)
533 Eugene Davidson an Lambert Schneider
Manuskript; DLA, A: Jaspers
London, W1, 29thJuly, 1947
Dear Doctor Schneider,
It has been a long journey to London and I have often thought of you and the Stern-
bergers and your kindness to me during my stay in Heidelberg.
Today in London I was reminded by the Editor of Hutchinsons of the interest in
the English speaking world in the work of Karl Jaspers.1215
Do you suppose there would be any possibility of his writing a book (assuming that
it does not already exist) for translating into English, that would lay down the essen-
tials of his philosophy, within the limits of 300/400 pages that we found so impor-
tant for Publishing conditions in England and the United States?
There may be no likelihood of Professor Jaspers undertaking such a work, but if he
would be interested, I feel certain that it would meet with a favourable response, both
from Hutchinsons and the Yale University Press, and it occured to me that you might
be in a position to talk to him about it.
My trip to Munich and then on to Vienna, Switzerland, Paris and here was not un-
productive and I have great hopes that this whole journey will have justified itself in
a Publishing sense as it most certainly has in a personal one.
At any rate it was a great pleasure meeting you and Mrs. Schneider and your friends
and I hope that we shall see one another again soon.
With every good wish to you,
Very sincerely yours,
Eugene Davidson
